  • Giant Caps

Quick request...I've seen some of you guys post pictures of big value plastic caps but I was wondering if anybody had a picture comparing the size of a plastic with the same size high quality electro?

    47uf 630vdc vs 47uf? etc etc.

    Thanks!

The overriding, fundamental, screaming reason that electrolytics exist is that they are enormously smaller and more compact for the capacitance than other types.

47uF plastic will be quite a bit larger than 47uF electro in any equal voltage rating.

Go google "motor run capacitor" for some typical sizes for plastic film capacitors.
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

Oh I know. I've seen pictures of them by themselves...I was wondering about side by side with a regular electro for comparison.
I'm just trying to get some ideas for my layout and my chassis size requirements before I order my parts.

I know the motor run caps and the film caps are shaped a big differently in the higher capacities. The motor runs seem to get longer and the film caps get fatter.

      How much would they weigh?

        Nothing like looking it up.

If you have to have 47uF and 630Vdc, it's going to be expensive. Motor run caps are generally rated at 250, 370, or 440VAC. The peak DC those caps could reasonably withstand are 353, 523, and 755Vdc, which is the peak value of a sine wave of that voltage. If you want 630Vdc, you're going to be using 440Vac caps. That's probably a good idea if you are doing a 500Vdc B+, too.

        Here's one: It's 3-5/8" X 2" X 8" and weighs 2.5 pounds.

Here's another: It's 2" diameter and 4 1/4" long, weighs 1/2 pound. Pretty much you're looking at about that range of size and weight. By the way, Surplus Center is a great place to buy these, as they're $5 - $8. New from HVAC supply houses they're about $30 each.

Thanks? I've read your discussions about caps with some of the other members. I remember someone had ordered a few and I was just wondering if they had any pictures left...

If I had asked what are they, where are they, and how are they I could understand the gruffiness...but I didn't?

          Thanks though.

I've seen the surplus ones before. That oval shape is way to hard to think around especially if I need more then one of them. I just grabbed all solen's for the filter supply.

I was going to say I could post a comparison pic after a bit with Solen 47uf and Elytic 47uf, but it sounds like you've already got it handled. The Solens are very large in comparison....I'm going to put them into a Sunn 2000S as it has room, although I'm using the chassis mount 100uf 630v and 51uf 630v, and the 47uf 630v and 22uf 630v Solens in this amp.

the lower ESR makes my Line6 sound like a cross between a 2rock/madprofessor/fuchs/deizel!

hey guys my order came in so I'll put this up for posterity.

so those are IC 100uf 450vdc Electros. The red caps are the cheap 1 dollar film caps from AES in all sorts of sizes. Blacks are Solens in 47uf, 10uf, 22uf.

Anyone have an opinion on using these in the power supply filtering? Any advantages except long life?

they spec much better than lytics, particularly wrt DA.

for me, i just can't spare the real estate. or the money!

(the BAGA has eight 500uF @ 500VDC LCR caps.)

they really giant. I got a couple of the 47 Solens but I definitely can't use them anywhere in any mods or conversions. The chassis needs to be about 2 inches thicker.

The 630 standard vdc is good though. 500 is a little close for some of the things I wanna build.

Well once you get some money, you can build another amp kg and use some Solens..haha! Maybe a BAGA light?

come to think of it, i actually have some even bigger caps around for a project that still waits for me... an el509 monster. i have everything i need for it too, except the flying plate caps and a suitable chassis. i was planning on building this one right into a three shelf wheeled shop cart.

That sounds interesting! I've heard about those EL509's....you like big power amps I think...haha. I thought about building a high power bass amp with a couple 813's as I have some around, but a lack of suitable transformers and a lack of money to have someone make some has held me back. Well that and a million other projects!
