  • About choosing transformers.

I was thinking of taking 5F4 trannies and building basically a blackface princeton, but with 6L6s instead of V's. I'm pretty sure the power transformer has the balls for that, but I'm confused on the output transformer stuff. It's made for 2 6L6's anyway, so, in my mind, I don't see a problem. What am I not considering? I've done a little reading, but it's still a bit over my head at them moment.

6L6 and 6V6 will have a different impedance and would in theory require different output xformers. So I'd hold off until a guru answers your question. But, in general, the output xformer and power tube should match impedance.

If the output xformer were powering 6L6s before, then they would match your new project. But if you add 1 or more 6L6s to your new project (that wasn't originally powered by the amp your taking the transformers from) then you may have a power rating issue.

But if the wattage of your new 6L6 project is equal to or less than the amp you pulled the output xformers from, then you should be ok, powerwise.

But someone else should chime in about this.

If I understand correctly you wanna use the trannies of a 5F4 and build the princeton circuit around it, right? I don't see any problem. Keep the power stage from the 5F4 -including the PI- and build the preamp like the princeton. The power stage of both amps are very similar circuit wise. Just some different values here and there. You can even decide if you go for the presence or not, by just leaving that part of the circuit out.
Besides you can chose if you wanna use one or two preamp stages before the PI. Either by going right into the PI after the volume pot or by adding a second preamp stage and feed it's signal into the PI after dropping the signal with a 2M2 resistor and 47pF parallel cap.
See Princeton AA964 or Princeton AA1164 schematics.
