  • What kind build should I go with out of a Gibson GA-35 Lancer?

I bought a broken Lancer off eBay to fix up for my girlfriend for Christmas. She's always played acoustic but wants to learn electric. My question is what type of builds would be good for a new electric guitarist who is probably going to play mostly rhythm on it? She doesn't have any pedals, and I know she want a nice clean, but she'll need something crunchy so she can play the parts she usually plays but with a good overdriven tone. If possible I'd like throw in some Fenderish reverb, but my main priority is to get the clean and overdriven sounds as good as possible (I think 5 preamp tubes should be sufficient). I haven't had the time to look at B+ or any other values yet, but I know the amp did come with 7591's and has 3 6eu7's and a 12ax7 and 12au7. I'd like to use 6v6's and 12a_7's throughout the amp. Can you guys and gals think of some good builds for chimey beautiful cleans, and some tight classic rock styled overdrive?

    Thanks for looking!

Looks like a fun amp. Why don't you fix it up?

If I"m not mistaken, that's a transformer coupled phase splitter. Not something one sees in many amps anymore.
I'm with tubeswell.........Fix it up as it is.If you don't like it you can always gut it later. JMTCW

yeah i guess it couldn't hurt, and it would require way less work. Do you think the transformer coupled phase inverter would sound good? I'd heard somewhere that they weren't very efficient (maybe they just meant cost wise). I guess fixing up the way it was designed is really the best way to find out!

Some interstage transformers are excellent, some not so good. They can be wound to attain near perfectly balanced phase inverters if properly designed and executed.Good ones are complex to design and expensive to implement. I suspect the cost element and newly developed circuits are what drove them from favor.

Plus 1 on the fix it as is.
The VERY BEST amp techs and amp modification gurus have a simple Rule #1. Get it all going as original BEFORE trying to mod/rebuild anything.
