Is a grid leak input somehow 'looser' or flabbier than a cathode biased input? I realize that there are many factors throughout a particular amp that can contribute to a loose or sloppy bass/loose feel, i.e. filtering, rectifier, coupling etc. However, all else being equal, if you were to swap out a grid leak biased input (12AX7) for a cathode bias set up for full or nearly full gain (idk, something like a 1.5 to 2.2K resistor and a 10uf to 25uf bypass) should I expect any noticeable difference? I'm talking in generalities here. Thanks!

Grid leak input

I've tried a grid leak biased input stage on a couple of amps. A 5E3 where I could select one or both inputs with a switch and Bass amp where I could select either input via a switch (single volume control). On both amps the guitar is connected to both tubes all the time. Both amps used a 0.1uF cap to block the DC bias on the grid leak.
Overall I would say the grid leak input was a little dirtier sounding with a browner sound (a little high end missing).WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
