  • Ampeg; opamp changes??

    Hey all!

I have this Ampeg SVT 200T which is basically a SS SVT amp; it sounds great and is mainly my backup / "other" bass amp.

A while ago I had to replace a potmeter as it didn't work anymore; when I did that I noticed that the whole amp was filled with 4558 opamps.

My question; would replacing the opamps with a better quality opamp change the sound / alter the sound / would be adviseable???

And if yes, what would be a good replacement???

In some of the higher gain spots, like the input stage, a lower noise type like the 5532 MIGHT reduce some hiss when the thing is turned up, but the overall tone would not be affected much if at all.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

      Thanks man!

Lukcily all are socketed so I can swap and check. They might improve the EQ section as they play a HUGE role in this section, although they might be used as gyrators and then no change is hearable.

      I'll check!
