    Thanks for the reply - all that makes sense to me so I am now less ignorant than yesterday.

    I had missed that point about increased idle current resulting in loss of primary inductance really only applying to single ended trannies. That bit came from a discussion I had with a Hammond Apps Engineer when we discussed driving a Hammond 125ESE (15 Watts and 80mA max idle) with a triode strapped EL34 ( I wanted to run 100mA idle). He suggested that the lower drive impedance from the triode connected EL34 would more than make up for the loss of primary inductance. As it turns out, that was a project which I abandonned. The 125ESE is back on the shelf and based upon what I learned from your post above I'm going to drive it with an 845 at around 850V for a 20W Single Ended Guitar Amp - not a project for the faint hearted or the beginner.
