JM2C... If cost is actually an issue... Skip the rectifier tube. A resistor will get you there at a fraction of the cost and labor. Use a cathodyne PI. EL84's don't need much swing to get them clipping. The preamp will provide enough that a cathodyne will suffice, provided... Skip the two inputs and cascade the preamp stages instead. All this has already been suggested so I'm just adding my +1.
There's a schem floating around for a two EL84 amp with two 9 pin tubes called the "Daisy Cutter". Cranked up it provides plenty of gain and the clips sound pretty good.
The Orange TT uses a pair of EL84's and two 9 pin tubes. Sort of a one trick pony. But it's a good trick.
Your schem, with refinements, would make a fine amp. But a bit lack lustre compared to the TT or Daisy Cutter. No offense. Just different goals I think. Unless your guy preferes the tone of boost pedals or distortion boxes to the plug and play, cranked amp sound, you may want to reconsider the design. Raw, cranked up clipping is what two EL84 amps are made for, right?
