  • Solid State drivers for Output Tubes

    For your possible interest.

As an EE in the day job I'm on the Linear Technology Mailing List.

New Product for this month, High Voltage OP Amp.

    0-140 Volts or +/- 70 Volts

    Datasheet

Thanks for the link, what do you think with some mods, can the power amp example on p.19 be made to drive the power tube into AB2? May be the swing is still too low for the big tubes...

Man, that was quick, Wavebourn already posted at diyaudio http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes...2-12-12-a.html

Data sheets says source or sink 10mA so you could use it to drive well into AB2. 140V pk to pk means it will be OK for any output tube which biases at less than or equal to say -65 V, that is, any of the common output tubes including 6550 and KT88 on the "big" side. Not sure about KT120 would need to check its data.

The power amp example on p 19. uses complementary output devices and it is unfortunate that tubes don't come in P and N types only what we could loosely call an N type.

What you would need to do is run 2 of those op-amps, one for each of the push and pull sides.
        Either
wire one as a simple inverter off the output of the other
        OR
feed the 2 from a phase splitter.
        Cheers,
        Ian

Apparently it's only available in surface mount packaging. I was interested in the Burr Brown OPA445AP until I found out they are over $20USD.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

Damn SMD! I ordered some LME49810 (~$4/ea) to play with - can run upto 200V, will see what it can do.

              Nice!
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"
