  • Japanese Symbols in a Greco Guitar

    Hi All,
    need assistance if possible again.
Recent acquisition has these symbols letters ect in the cavity.
I was informed perhaps a factory Inspectors marks ?
Pretty sure the symbols are Japan like the daimaru.
Hopefully the capital T is for Teisco ! not sure though.
Greco had no factory in 1966. Others built their guitars what I was led to understand.
Confident this is a Teisco build copy of a FRAMUS GUITAR made by Teisco.
Undergoing minor repairs but couple months post pics all prettied up playing condition.
Another purchase which is complete Japanese Madness !
    But love these designs.
Thanks to all for any help provided.

Very cool looking guitars! It is a inspection sticker as indicated by the bottom two characters, T could stand for anything, Teisco is likely as you said. The numbers are date code: 41.4.29 = 1967 April 29. 1967 = the 41st year of Hiroshito's reign. Hirohito - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

      FANTASTIC JAZBO8
Unbelievable wealth of information on this site.
      Took neck off.
      Another stamp same thing.
Numbers are clear symbols rubbed by factory buffing after painting.
Not anywhere as clear as the body cavity symbols.
Numbers are 41. 4. 28. Which would mean neck was made 1 day earlier.
Hopefully dai.h can jump in with his knowledge on the symbols.
      Thanks so much.

Jazbo looks right, but "41" (as in Showa 41--kind of an arbitrary dating system based on an individual's life) is 1966. The Chinese characters say "inspection". I have no idea what the "T" stands for but "Teisco" sounds like a good guess. Sometimes you might see someone's name (surname), but since the symbol there is just a "T" IMO more likely to be for Teisco (but again, I don't know for certain).

edit: (actually I wonder if the "T" isn't for some individual, since that should make any defect(s) easier to trace back to the source)

BTW, I really dig the funky shapes of some of those old guitars. Perhaps things are a bit too generic today(?).

        presently, it's the "Heisei" period

Wikipedia Japan made no reference to Teisco, perhaps some Japanese rock historians can provide more clues?

So is that just Wikipedia in English translated into Japanese? Or?

Ohta, I think it's a Japanese name 太田, or the city where the pickups were made.
