  • Technical Appeal: Thomas Organ Vox Amps

This one comes up from time to time as I try to help folks get their Thomas Organ Vox amps back into running. I can help with most things, but when I come up against an issue with the driver transformer, I'm flying blind.

I need to find a corpse. Actually, two of them. Known-dead driver transformers from a Royal Guardsman and a Beatle head that I can dissect. (Well, of course I could make a known-live one dead for the experiment, but it seems like a shame. )

Does one of the members of this forum know where I can find such transformer corpses? I will take them apart, measure and document the construction, and post to the web the formula for making fresh ones from old power transformers.

I have taken tinkering with a live one as far as I dare with my work on my Beatle driver transformer, as documented in the pages on "Bulletproofing your Thomas Vox Amp" at GEOFEX. Now I need to actually cut one open. My experimentation got me the raw turns ratios and such, but to see how to make the frequency response work out, I need to see how the actual transformers were wound.

Any leads? I will of course heap praise on your name and immortalize you for your help by posting notice of your help at GEO - or not, as you choose. 8-)
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

Hmm. I have a couple from PV, used in a VERY similar circuit, but I doubt that helps.

Send me a note, and I will forward the schematic that uses it.
