Reverb-related question

Appologies in advance...Speaking of stepping on someone's thread...Bruce or Amp Kat, I don't suppose one or both of you would be willing to give me your brief impression of the normal vs. vibrato channel? (even just to say which one you prefer (I trust your taste )) My personal reason for jumping in this discussion in the first place was that I'm building a single channel amp with a BF like preamp, only I'm leaving the reverb out of it. I'm trying to decide whether to lay it out with the normal channel config or the vibrato channel config (extra 12ax7 stage, a few more components, and one step up in PT heater current rating)

I have a buddy with a BFDR I haven't seen in ages. Maybe it's time to look him up

Man that's a hard call in this particular amp because they both sound so damn good. If I'm playing just clean I like the normal but IMO the vib. channel breaks up a little better for drive even with a pedal for some added drive and just a tad of reverb is awesome too so you may miss that but the normal at about 5 with a good pair of 8's in parallel is just awesome and has that chimey tone that none of the other amps besides a few have but it's a hard call and don't think you'll be disappointed with either.

Next time you have one apart, try no cap vs 47pF... the whole "tone" of the preamp changes and it sounds just a little more gainy too.
I have a Deluxe Reverb here that is in for a tune up... I'll try it too as it has been a long time since I've done it.
I wouldn't be suprised to find out Leo Fender did very very little math and just messed with this tweaking circuit emperically until he found a cap and tone combination that suited him.

You have some pretty good ears for a drummer because allthough I can hear a change it's not big enough for me to tell what it is. Seems like the no cap decays a little shorter than the 10 and 47pf. Maybe a slight tone change but not much. If I recorded it you probably couldn't tell. I used a test clip so it was instant change almost

On the subject of Fender BF reverb. I am in need of a tweak to reduce the overall amount of reverb and get a wider range of control at the pot. Any suggestions?

Put a resistor in series with the control.

Or put a 250Ka pot in place of the stock one and connect the .003uF cap to the new pot's wiper instead and then run the audio out of the top lug... into the 470K isolation resistor.

I tend to agree with Bruce. Amps are made to listen to, and I'm pretty sure if I was building a reverb function for a guitar amp, I'd be tweaking the response(s) by listening.
