When I was an ignorant kid - as opposed to an ignorant adult as today - I was trying to invent an oscilloscope. I had a couple scope CRTs - 5UP1 - and needed some high voltage for the third anode. I had a couple extra 12v transformers. I thought to myself, gee, if I turn this around and put 120v into the 12v winding, I ought to get 1200 out of the 120v winding. And I did!!! REctified and filtered, it even got me a spot on my screen. It even lasted a couple weeks before flaming out.
