  • What do all the tube pins do!

My title is only mostly joking...

I have the RCA tube manual and it has fun little pictures like this:

    http://www.tubecad.com/2006/11/04/6P14P%20&%206P15P.png

I know what some of the abbreviations mean but I don't think they all get explained in the manual.

So...is there a fun rundown of what pins do what on the common tubes? I'm thinking 12ax7, 6l6, 6v6, el84, el34...stuff like that. Something like "12ax7 - pins 4 and 5 are the heaters" - a nice list. Thanks!

Open your RCA tube manual to page 2. Study the picture and begin reading page 3.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

Sounds to me like you need a primer on 'how a vacuum tube operates'.
The first tube was a diode.
      A plate & a cathode.
      Useful for rectification & switching.
Then Lee DeForrest added a grid.
      The rest is history.

The difference between the 6P14P and 6P15P is as follows. The 6P14P connects the Suppressor grid to the cathode internally. The 6P15P brings the Suppressor grid to separate pins and also has some internal shields. Since the Suppressor grid is usually grounded, the shields probably are positioned inside the tube to lower noise or coupling between grid and plate.

They stop the tube falling out of the socket

And did you really see those Russian tubes in an RCA book?

No, I was just guessing based on how they drew the symbol. Can anybody find an actual data sheet? For a little insite, look for an EF86 data sheet where it explains the shields in that tube.

Oh, that wasn't aimed at you, LT. The OP said he was looking in his RCA book and found pictures like... and posted some Russian tubes.
