  • Screen Resistors & Current Limiting

If my screen supply is regulated and current limited, what impact does it have on my screen stoppers? If the tube is conducting hard enough to drag the screens from their idle voltage, I'm guessing that the other tube is pretty well shut off at that point, and if both tubes are conducting, then the impact on screens will be minimal/moderate. Does the screen stopper really do anything besides current limiting?

I guess your answers depend on how you implemented the 'regulated & current limited' screen supply.
Here are some excellent articles that broach the subject.

Thanks, that's certainly something to think about. I was planning to regulate with a control voltage taken from a pot, but now I think I'll make sure to feed the pot a scaled version of B+ at the plates rather than a fixed voltage taken off one of the LV regulators. It's essentially Horowitz & Hill Fig 6.47, limited at 20mA (for a pair of EL34's - if screens are getting hammered, they can't both be conducting hard at the same time). I had considered running a stereo pot for the MV, and doing half of it for the traditional MV (JCM 800 2204), and the other half for the screen regulator, but I might rather add a knob or steal the presence pot.
