    Getting ready to install a new power trans in a twin reverb.

    its a Hammond 290fx

    There is an orange wire they call "shield" , i guess ive never seen that before.. does it need to go to ground?

    It's just an electrostatic shield between the primary and secondaries. No need to attach this to the signal ground (in fact, this would probably be undesirable). You can attach it to any convenient grounding place on the chassis, such as one of the bolts used for mounting the transformer.
