  • SE output transformer for GA 9 build

I have a Gibson GA 9 that I love as do all my friends. I would like to build a clone for a buddy of mine but can't seem to come up with a proper output transformer. I have never built a single ended amp so I'm a little confused on OT selection. If my research is accurate, I need a 15 to 20 watt, SE, at about 3k to 5K primary impedance. This amp uses a pair of 6V6's paralleled so I would halve the 8K rating of the single 6V6, correct? Any help appreciated.

FWIW I just built a GA-9 myself a few days ago and it is definitely my favorite amp of several I've constructed . You have the right idea on the OT specs so far as impedance goes but power is only about 9W, probably what Gibson used for the model number...I used a Hammond 125E universal OT I already had on hand and wired it for 3K primary Z but a purpose built SE OT would be better. A Hammond 125ESE would work or maybe an Edcor for less $$$ https://www.edcorusa.com/xseseries (primary current is about 75ma on my amp)
BTW, it might be worth experimenting with the 6SJ7 version of the GA-9, the pentode preamp sounds great and the metal can of the tube cuts hum way down
(my amp is the 6SJ7 version, have also used this tube in other builds and love the sound so I'm biased for it and octals in general ;-)

Thanks for the info, Bluto. I found a OT from classictone that fits the bill. I'm building the 12AX7 version.
