Renovating old PA amps can often come up with a similar general question, but pushed a little further. Many lower powered PA amps are designed with a range of higher effective secondary impedances, without the capability or design to allow winding sections to be split and reconfigured, and where the secondary wire is typically only one gauge. In some cases, winding portions can be found to present something like 8 and 16 ohm, but may only represent a low % of wound secondary turns (often < 20%). Of course the intent is to push the same (or more) power out to the speaker through that small percentage of available turns. Given no more pressing requirement, choosing the highest speaker impedance winding section as the modification to make provides more peace of mind.
