  • Odd Harmonics

I have a build that sounds real good but not as great as I want it. What makes odd harmonics when playing a single note. I have a hi gain SLO style lead channel that is just a bit off. I dont even know if it is odd harmonics or something else. When playing single notes I notice extra harmonics sort of buzzing up the sound. The pick attack is great but that lil bit of bzz is frustrating me, it is just not a clean enough pick attack. Is it the power supply voltages? The build is PP 6v6 with the SLO lead channel as the preamp. I have 396/Plates, 370/Screens, B+2/352, B+3/343, B+4/340 with bias current being 27mA(10W diss/tube). This is a very simple amp with no reverb, no channel switching, no fx loop. Just a balls out amp. Suggestions Please!

    Chunk,

You might try tightening up both the bass and treble ends and see if you get more the result you're after. Generally the more distorted a signal the better it sounds with a narrow bandwidth. For test purposes you can take low value caps - perhaps with a pot in series - and jump different places in the signal chain to ground "dialing" out the high frequencies to see where it makes the most difference. It ain't uncommon to have a small value cap 50pf or so - from the plate of one tube to ground, the cathode, or the control grid. Limiting the size of the cathode bypass caps can get rid of a lot of "thunk" and other choppy symptoms. "The more gain, the more pain" - in getting your sound "right."
