Fender style tonestack/gain question

Would there be any effect on the tone if the gain pot and tonestack were reversed? So that if it went..

First stage.. gain pot.. tonestack.. second stage..

Instead of

First stage.. tonestack.. gain pot.. second stage?

I've tried to search but it's hard to find information about this.

I'm talking more in the context of a Fender clean channel, as opposed to the higher gain amp. I know of an amp has the OD master volume right before the OD's tonestack (no cathode follower either), and it doesn't seem to affect the sound negatively. But what about Fender style clean channels?

For regular tube amp volume control values, it would make the range of control depend on the volume control setting, so inconsistent performance.
This is due to the output impedance of a volume control varying widely, from pretty much 0 at low settings to a max of about half the track value.

I think the tone would change with gain pot setting because of the varying impedance feeding the tone stack.

Not really worth noting, but... I just simulated it and found that with the volume control in front of the tone stack it's possible to get more gain. Less than 1dB, but more gain. Must have something to do with the net voltage division relative to circuit placement but I didn't get out the calculator for it. Not even 1dB and pretty crummy EQ control with the volume down low.
