  • Remote A/B switch

I have several project and vintage amps that are 2 channel but do not have channel switching. I know the conventional way is to have a A/B switch box that you run 3 long guitar cables to. Does anyone have a schematic for an active (preferably 9v) active switcher that you can just sit on the amp with a couple of very short cables and run one cable to it from your guitar that uses a standard footswitch to toggle the channels? I've never seen one offered commercially. Seems like it would sell to me....

As long as there's a buffered pedal (eg tuner)between the guitar lead and the (passive) AB box input then the following cables shouldn't degrade the signal.
It seems to work out ok for me anyway

Whirlwind and saturnworks both make active a/b boxes but they're not cheap. This Belcat one is about the cheapest I've seen:

I guess I wasn't clear. I didn't mean active as far as signal at all. That isn't an issue.... I meant active as far as the switching. The usual/normal way to switch channels on an old 2 input amp is to put an A/B switch after my pedal board and run two guitar cables to the amp. I'm suggesting running one guitar cable from the pedal board to a small A/B box at the amp that is switched by a standard 1/4 inch plug foot switch like modern 2 channel amps with channel switching. That way I could use my standard pedal board setup with all of my amps. I don't need a stomp box switcher.

So I guess that would be a remote switched A/B box?
Like a relay with remote switch?

Yeah, exactly. Something like this with the appropriate miniature SPDT relay and using a battery or a wall wort. I may be able to common ground it and just switch the signal to A or B if the channel inputs are common grounded. No need for the power supply in this. Click image for larger version

If you don't need isolated grounds, this is probably overkill:
Pure A/B+ Remote controlled A/B pedal from Champion Pedals; Allows you to switch between amps while keeping the cable runs short and allowing the flexability of a longer footswitch cable and better tone!

Thanks G1 but I think I have people confused. I'm not looking for a stomp box. I guess the best way to describe it is a remote input switcher controlled by a standard foot switch and cable.

Is this what you're talking about?

It is still a stomp box. You just want the button remote from the function. The idea would be a common AB switch put next to the amps with short cords, the stomp switch would bo on a wire tether 20-30 feet away out front. Inside the AB box, a relay takes place of the former stomp button. The relay is then controlled from the remote stomp button.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Sorry but (given what I understand of your application) I still don't see what the problem is with, or what benefit any of these products would have over, a simple AB channel select stomp switch as the last item on your pedalboard?
As the length of cable in the signal path is the same whichever.

That link is for a unit like Enzo described. It has a jack for a remote footswitch. The A/B stomp section can stay at the amp. It is a relay type unit.

What is wrong with the schematic you posted above?
