  • Music Man output section?

So, what would you call the way some of the Music Man amps have the output section set up?

    I'm fixing/rebuilding an RD 2165 for example.
The signal is applied to pin 8, it has a +22v on pin5 grid, of course we know it runs the insanely high 700v on the plates and about 1/2 that or ~350v on the pin4 grids.

Does this topology have a name?

The topology is found more often in radio transmitters. Cathode driven, grounded grid, etc. I think I read that Tom Walker was in fact, a ham op.

I would simply call it a "cascode". The cathode driven, “grounded grid” amplifier (or simply “common grid”) is just the other half of the configuration.

I like cathode driven/grounded grid and I think those are biased in Class B, are they not?

Yes, class B or very close. They sound a bit hard to my ears, but I can see why some people like them. Had one in the shop a few days ago. Someone had tried to fix a carbon tracked tube socket with glue, not even a high voltage dope. Needless to say it didn't last long and the whole output section got toasted. All for want of a two dollar tube socket.

I'll second that. My bandmate uses one. I am not a fan.
