      And doesn't JJ make a "reversed" 12DW7 type, swapping places between the high and low gain sides?

        Yep, you can get the JJ tube either way. ECC832 or ECC823. I believe the 832 is the "conventional" configuration.

          For another alternative, check out the schematic for the SJB Ant (available at Schematic Heaven) which uses the aforementioned 6U8, but uses the pentode side to drive the tank (one of those 1925 ohm input impedance Accutronics) - it's interesting to note that the output impedance is about 5x higher than that of the tank, and also how much signal is going into the reverb circuit (the higher impedance tanks maybe withstand overdriving better?). Lots to think about here.
