  • choke question

I need opinions on the choke i bought for my new build. Specifically concerning possible tonal implications presented to me in a reply at another forum. The schematic is linked below. What i was told is that too big of a choke (in henries) can cause an amp to become less dynamic. This worries the he|| out of me because obviously this is one of the trademarks of a great amp. The choke i bought on recommendation is a hammond 20H/100Ma choke. It's huge at 3.3 Lbs and size wise it's bigger than the OT on my 18 watt.I was also told marshalls use chokes around 5 henries and that 20 is indeed huge.

So should i be worried that this will hamper any of the dynamics and squish (i assume that might be harmed too if a huge choke crates a stiffer supply) i am so looking forward too? I can return it for a smaller one i'm sure, so i need to know if this choke can be a disadvantage in the areas i described or in any other way for that matter. The amp WILL be cathode biased, so maybe thats a reason for a bigger choke??? heres the schematic, thanks..

I doubt that choke will be detrimental in that position at that value, I have seen plenty of amps with 20H chokes. If you are still in doubt just tack the choke in without installing it or cutting the wires and give a listen.

I guess i'll just use it. And i just saw i new READABLE schematic for the matchless chieftain who's PA is pretty much exactly as mine will be, and it shows a 20H choke. So i guess if it's good enough for Mark S. it's good enough for me ! This is going to be one heavy SOB tho, especially if i make it into a 1-12 combo with the EV i intend to use !
