Was again going through the stock an pulled out a few NOS Sylvania 6Y6Gs that I've stocked away and I've decided they go in the Epiphone EA26RVT I'm "rebuilding." Now rebuilding in this case means using the chassis and cabinet while changing around the circuitry to my desires mainly due the classic Gibson "rats nest" engineering that I want to eliminate - and I really don't like the sound of 6BQ5s. So I was going to use a PP pair of about 20 watts and the 6Y6s are just too "beautiful" (be still my throbbing heart <grin>) to ignore any longer. The 6Y6 is much like a 6V6 but made for low B+ supplies. Although the max plate voltage is listed as 200VDC they will work well up to around 300 VDC if you limit the plate dissipation. With a plate dissipation of only 12.5 W you'd thing they would look like a 6V6 but the bottle is more robust much more like a 5881 (the "real" 5881 - not the Russian "whatever") and these Syl guys are blackplates. So, for curiosity sake, I decided to check and see what AES was asking for them in case I wanted to lay a few others in stock (only have about 7 NOS) and was shocked that they were only $3.83 each for the 6Y6GTA. Very cheap for a low voltage 6V6 "equivalent" am definitely going to stock up. Lotsa great NOS North American made tubes out there folks for pennies on the original price dollar if you break out of the 12A_7/6L6/EL3-84 "ghetto."
