  • EVM12L versions - 200W vs 300W

    Hi,

It's well known that the EVM12L has different versions and serial numbers so I was wondering:

1/ Has anyone listened to the the "classic" 200W EVM12L (not the one manufactured today) know to have the 812-9460-xxxx numbers and the 300W Proline version 0812-0906, OEM #345 798 numbers?
2/ Which one sounded better for rock/metal and which one for blues/jazz?
3/ Here's something strange on the pics below. A MESA Black Shadow EVM12L known to be the 200W EVM12L has a cone number 79195QC. According to the serial on the back the other one (marked 0812-0906-xxxx) is a 300W Proline HOWEVER it has the same cone number? How is that possible? Both speakers not reconed.
Also I've seen 12Ls with cone number 79195 only. What does QC stand for?

QC is probably quality control. I have 2 different ones but will have to look to see what numbers.

The difference between the EVM12L and the EVM12L SII or "Proline" is that the 300W rated version has a Teflon coated voice coil making it able to dissipate more heat/power. As far as I know, both use the same cone- just different coils, which would explain why both have the same number stamped on the cone. FYI the number stamped on EV cones is not a speaker number, but rather a part number for the cone only. The same cones are used in multiple speakers.

most opinions are that the 200W unit sounds better for guitar, while the 300W unit is more a PA or Bass speaker.
Some like the Eminence EM12 version a bit more (Matt Weed at Atomium Amps) and I bought one from Peavey for cheap here

Thanks for the info so far. How true is that the 300W BLS (Zakk Wylde) version is based on the Proline?
