    Old Eminence Speakers

    Hey All,

    Just picked up a pair of these. 15", 8R, seller said they came out of a Wurlitzer jukebox. I picked them up cheap & they seemed kinda nice, and they passed Juan's "bump test." I tried looking up the number stamped & the only thing that came up was for some obviously-not-these 100W square-mags.

    I'm willing to try them out with some low-power amps because who doesn't like a Champ through a bigazz speaker... Just wondering - are these alnico, and any rough guesses on power handling?     Are there numbers anywhere on them? Magnet looks smallish and voice coil maybe 1"-1 1/4"? I wouldn't guess it to be a high power speaker.

      Nope, those are the only markings on them. That's why I'm figuring 15-20W max. I'm wondering if the "1580" is "15 inches, 8 ohms..." Definitely not 35W though. Probably pair them with some 10-15W amps.

        I'd say they are Japanese. Most all US made speakers would have a manu code. Square magnet would be CTS but they don't look like that.

        Edit: Motorola would be a gold color like that also.

          mozz is that not a manufacturer code (67-7522) stamped on the magnet? Did Eminence ever outsource speakers like that & then brand them as their own? I thought they were the ones who everyonevelse called to make speakers for them. I'll check on the color when I get home, but that may be the lighting.

          I've got a pair of 15" 50W CTS square-mags in my Bassman cab. They're quite a bit more substantial in the frame.

          And, anybody know if they're alnico? I'd be surprised (quite happy actually ) but wouldn't rule it out. There's like a mesh screen around all the magnet stuff in the back; it's kind of brittle so I didn't want to go poking around. I'll see if I can get a peek inside with a bright light.

          Thanks for everyone chiming in, I'll keep possibilities open & keep looking for info.

            Looks like an Alnico magnet.
            Please post a picture that shows the complete magnet.
            Where do you see those numbers?

              Yes I can't see any numbers but if you posted 67 7522 then they are Eminence. Alnico too if the wraparound is over a round magnet.

                Hey guys,

                Honest question, cuz I know how computers can be - Can y'all see the pictures in the first post? I'm seeing them on my end. The numbers are ink-stamped right on the back of the magnet wraparound.

                The actual magnet has a mesh surround around it, & I didn't want to go poking through it to find the magnet. I'll see if I can shine a bright light inside for better details.

                Lemme know if y'all can or can't see my pictures & I'll try to upload some more later tonight if not.

                  I can't see any numbers. Yes, magnet may be covered, usually tin foil, I guess to keep strays attaching to the magnet. I'm thinking Eminence made speakers for a lot of manufacturers, but usually it was something they had designed already, but you never know if they took requests. 75 is kinda late for alnico, maybe it was requested or maybe they gave the customer a deal to get rid of them.

                        I had a Marsland 15 in the early 70s with an AlNiCo magnet. There were two side covers pressed from sheet metal on the magnet structure, if you removed them you could see the Voice Coil poking through the base plate. The Magnet was the same diameter all the way from the back of the U shaped plate to the Voice Coil gap. That second picture that shows the connecting wires sure looks like the side of an AlNiCo magnet structure.

                        Similar speaker in a Music Man 115 RH 75 cabinet.

When I'm posting pics, do I need to click the "Insert" option & then pick a size (thumbnail small etc.)? I think for 2 I did but the others I didn't. I'm still figuring my way around a bit after a bit of an absence.

                          Anyway, lemme try & do the picture of the back of the magnet again, USING the "Insert" & "Small" options.

                              Yes, that black mesh covers the end of the Voice Coil and protects it so nothing can get in there and cause a Voice Coil rub.
