  • What is this amp?

I've got a bit of an obsession with Joe Walsh's sound on the old James Gang recordings. I've always heard that he played Marshall amps and usually played a Les Paul through it. I had also read that the early years he used a fender twin and in the studio would use a tele. (any comments on that are welcome too)

I was watching an old video of the James Gang playing Walk Away and saw something. In the background it shows Joe's 2 amps. Both have a definite vintage Marshall style to the heads. Except, the one head's control panel is almost the whole length of the housing. It sure looks like an old Marshall but different. I cannot find any old Marshall with that particular look to it. Anyone know what it is?

I remember hearing that Joe used a HiWatt head (gift from Pete Townshend) and thought perhaps they altered a Marshall head's housing to fit the hiwatt controls.

One friend suggested that it could be an old Marshall bass head.

Any thoughts, suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks everyone.

I've attached a few pictures to help.

It is likely a Marshall 50 watt PA head.

I was just watching Joe Walsh on the Carvin promotional DVD I recieved in the mail and he mentioned that he used the old Carvin vintage amps, but didn't pursue their guitars until recently. Seems like every time I see a photo or video of him he's using a different rig! Since you're after his sound I figured you'd enjoy this clip...
