  • Anyone ever used/built an isolation box like this (see link)?

    GO HERE

I have an old Sears 5XL that I'd like to get up & running, but I need a 35w5 (I think) rectifier & an isolation transformer - any feedback on the item in the eBay auction above? Plans to DIY?

When we talk about isolation transformers, you must also consider the context. In the case of "hot chassis" amplifiers, of which amps that use 50C5 and 35W4 are often examples, we refer to transformers that isolate the mains power. In the USA that means 120VAC in and 120VAC out.

The isolation transformers in your ebay ad are for line level signals, not mains power.

Power isolation transformers would be something like this from Allied Electronics:

    Mfr Part#: N-68X (Triad)
    Allied Stock#: 967-9502

They come in all sizes and power ratings, so you have to get one of appropriate power handling for the amp using it.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Boy, I feel dumb! I couldn't clearly see the jacks & thought that auction WAS for a mains isolation transformer! Now I look more closely, it makes sense. Someone on another forum had linked to that auction as a solution for making an old 50C5 amp safe to use, hence my confusion. Thanks for clearing it up.
