  • spkr-mounted OT - how to add spkr jack?

I have two amps with OT mounted on the speaker frame - one is a '52 Princeton and one is a circa '49 Gibson GA30. Both are in good original condition.

I would like to have jacks/plugs in both to allow driving other cabinets and/or to plug other amps into the internal speakers. Any creative ideas how to do this with minimum impact to the collectible condition of the amps?

In the case of the GA30 I considered mounting the OT on the chassis, but would be open to less invasive, yet still somewhat elegant solutions.

disconnect the tranny from the speaker. connect leads from the tranny into a box with a pair of jacks. Makd a speaker cable with a plug to go to one of the jacks. That leaves you with one jack free for an ext. spkr.

That IMHO is the best solution. It is totally reversible and will not cause any modification to these venerable and collectable old amps which could reduce their value. However, I would caution you to think twice about stressing the ancient OTs on these old amps by adding an extension speaker for which they were never intended. You want the original iron to be ok. If you must do this I would even consider shelving the original OT and installing a replacement if one will drop in without drilling holes or other stuff.

I would not use an extension speaker and the internal speaker at the same time. I would like to be able to run the Princeton through another speaker instead of the one in the amp. As far as the Gibson is concened I would also like to be able to run a different amp through the two speakers in the GA30.

I am fully aware of impedance matching concerns.
