  • Vox Super Beatle V1141

    Hey
I have an old Vox Super Beatle V1141, serial #10523XX that I'm looking to sell. I believe it is from the late 60's but I'm not positive. How can I date the amp and find out what it might be worth? I don't know if it is considered rare or there are tons of these out there? It is in really good condition, amp & cabinet, chrome frame, original cover. I tried submiting a e-mail to Vox but it wouldn't go through. I would appreciate any help available!
    Thanks!
    James

You know, back in the day we loathed them. You could buy one for $100 in the early 70s, throw the amp and stand away, and use the speakers for other things. Because of that it is now very rare to find a complete specimen, especially with an original cover and stand. Even though it is an American made one, fully funtional or not, I would guess it is worth at least $2000.....maybe twice that to the right person just because it is complete and desirable. I would put it on eBay and see how it bids. You can always pull it. You might be suprized. I read somewhere that someone in LA rented just the head of an SB to Jimmy Page for a recording session recently for a rediculous price. Of course that one was restored and flawless.

Hey olddawg, thanks for the comments! I have come across a couple articles mentioning how some people really loathed them back then, but I do know you don't see them too much anymore. I did find one online selling at a vintage shop for $3500. Mines not Mint, but in good condition. I was thinking abou trying Ebay or Craigs List, since there are none on there right now. I hate the thought of having to ship it somewhere!

      Thanks again!

Don't use Craigs List. Just state on eBay that buyer will pay for professinal shipping and you drop it off at the Fedx Store. If they are paying 4 grand they will want it that way.

The word Super was dropped from the name due to protests from the Beatle's management company, so your amp is an earlier amp. The earliest ones do not have the DIN footswitch jack, so yours is the later version of the Super Beatle. I will guess that yours also does not have the built-in repeat percussion effect either.

Value has a lot to do with condition and originality. Most of these came with 4 silver framed Celestions, often referred to as Silver Dogs. These speakers are often missing, having been pulled for use in other amps. Original coned Silver Dogs will sometimes bring as much as $200-$300 each, so your amp's value will vary depending upon the originality of the speakers.

All of the Thomas Organ heads can be a real pain to work on, so if there are any circuit problems the value will be reduced due to the cost of future repairs. Most of these heads that I've seen have needed near total re-capping, as the electrolytics that were used in these amps did not age well.

Location has a lot to do with value, as some markets will pay higher for certain amps than others. Ebay will allow for the widest reach, but shipping can be a problem. Most Thomas Organ Vox cabinets were constructed with particle board. I've had a couple of Viscounts that I bought on eBay turned into dust by poor packing and rough handling. So professional packing and shipping would be a smart, but expensive move.

With the current economy I've seen prices falling on a lot of vintage equipment. I think that $2000 would be top dollar for a good condition Beatle amp, with most selling in the $1000-1500 range.

            Just my 2 cents.

                Tee-hee!

Somebody called a Thomas Vox Beatle a vintage amp!
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.
