  • What should I pay for this amp?

    Hey everyone.

I'm completely new to tube amps and I don't even think I've heard one before. I've just gotten back into playing guitar and have been posting ads looking for them. I've been offered an old beaten up Regal amp (made in Canada). They seem to be pretty rare. He want's $100 for it. It's in bad condition physically, but it apparently works great. He said it was either 2 or 5 watts. Is $100 usually a fair price for a small amp like this? I just have no idea what to be looking for and don't want to get ripped off. Any advice is appreciated!

    Cheers.

The Regal I know of is mostly known for making decent inexpensive guitars, especially resonator guitars. As for the amp. If you can let us know the exact model number, the tube complement, the size brand and type of speaker, and any dates associated with the amp (pot codes, date on tube chart, etc) we might be able to advise you. Otherwise it is just a shot in the dark. If the tubes have any numbers other than 6s and 12s, it is most likely a line filament amp and you should probably stay away from it for safety issues.

If it has a dual EL84 PP output it is probably 15 watts and and may be as much as 20 watts. If it is a single ended EL84 amp it is around 5 watts. Old EL84 amps are quite sought after. For a single ended amp $100 is a deal if it is complete. If it is a PP amp it could be worth much more. You still have not given a model number or a tube complement. The amp in the review may not be your amp.
