  • Amp Repair Needed Splendor amp by Hitachi

I'm looking for someone to fix a 60's combo amp for me. Does anyone have any knowledge or info on the Splendor amp made by hitachi in the 60's? I have one of these 15 watt combo amps called the Splendor, which I got DOA. 2 of the power supply safety caps coming from the power supply transformer were blown. I replaced them as well as the power supply filter/can cap + all other caps, + it still blows fuses + will not power up. I assume the power transformer is blown, but do not know how to test the power transformer. I am willing to pay to ship it + whatever it costs to have the amp fixed if anyone knows someone who can do it.

    Where are you?

I am assuming this is a solid state amp? I'd be looking for shorted output transistors.

      Hey Enzo,

NO, this amp is all tube. Both tube pre amp (two 12Ax7's, and one 6BM8) and power section (two 6AQ5's and one 12AX7). Weird, I've never seen an amp like this. It also has reverb and tremolo. Puts out 15 watts in to two 7" alnico speakers. I'd love to get it working, but don't even know where to start at this point. Do you have any suggestions or know of anyone who may be able to fix/troubleshoot it? I'm in the Los Angeles area. Thanks.

The best way to test it is to disconnect all of the transformer secondaries and power it up. If it still blows the AC fuse, you have a shorted transformer. If not, then reconnect each secondary one at a time until the problem occurs again, and THAT is your problem area.

Even if you have a shorted power transformer, chances are excellent that you can retrofit something else. What you are describing is a pretty typical amp.

I agree with John, the amp sounds pretty typical. Any competent amp tech should be able to handle a repair. Your transformer can be tested as John describes, but have you fired up the amp with all the tubes removed? Tubes are the #1 reason fuses blow. If it holds a fuse with the tubes out, then it is a tube issue. if the fuse still blows without tubes, then something is shot. And really I'd suspect the output transformer before the power tranny.

            thanks

thanks for the advice! I would try trouble shooting as jfrond mentioned, but I already found a repairman locally who's taking care of it for me. Just out of curiosity, why would one suspect the output trans. before the power trans.? Is it because it isn't overrated as much or stressed more than the power tranny? Or are output transformers generally just of lower quality construction or something?

I have an audio repair shop. I think I have the same amp. Mine is a GA-301. I can't find a schematic, however, I could A-B the two. My shop is in Washington state. Let me know if you still want it repaired.

Hi, I know this post is several months old. However, after dropping off the amp in JANUARY, I was finally told by the repairman that he could not repair it, as he did not have a schematic + it kept blowing fuses. Is there any way you would be willing to either A B it for me, or snap a photo of how the power supply filter caps are wired to the power transformer? I know the power supply filter can cap was replaced + I think the wiring got messed up in the process. So, I suspect that is where the problem is. If your not interested in either fixing the amp by A B ing it, or posting a photo of the power supply wiring, would you be willing to sell me your splendor amp if you still have it? How much would you want?

                Sincerely,

                Jon

                  Splendor amp

                  Hi Jon,
I still have the amp and would sell it for $150. Works fine. Has a weak, cheesey reverb that I was told is normal. It is in Washington state. You pay shipping.

Thanks! I'd love to buy the amp! I"m sure it's not the best sounding amp in the world, but I've been extremely frustrated in not being able to fix it or at least find out what's wrong with it. I'm sure that if I had one in working order I could A B them + get it going. I don't get paid until about 2 weeks from now. If you could give me a total with shipping to 90026 zip code, I can paypal you the $ when I get paid. Thanks!
