Univox U255r- what is this phase inverter?

I had mine hooked to an external cab and it sounded great then I put it back in the original chassis and wondered why it suddenly sucked- swapped to the other speaker and it sounded good again. Mine had generic crappy ceramic mag speakers in it. The amp had been abused pretty badly!
