  • My squealing twin...help?

Hello. This is my first post here. So...I saw several people have similar problems with this on a vintage Fender Twin Reverb, but couldn't fins the solution. I love my Twin and had it re-capped about a year ago cause it was getting a little noisy. There is just one thing left that bugs me. When I turn on my reverb, it's a little more noisy than normal....but when I turn it up to about 7 or 8 (the reverb amount) it starts to squeal/feedback really loud. It won't stop until I turn the amount down. It will not do it when the reverb is switched off, only when it is on and turned about 7 or 8. Anyone have suggestions about were the problem could be? Should I be looking at the actual reverb unit or in the amp itself. It would be great if its something I could fix/replace/solder myself and not have to take it to the closest tube amp tech because it will take 2 months to get it back. Thanks for any info!

Sounds like mechanical feedback through the reverb pan to me.
Does it stil squeal when you take the reverb unit out of the cabinet (leave it connected) and lay it onto something soft like a thick cloth or a piece of foam rubber?

Genius! I took it out and can turn it up all the way. Do I need to mount some foam or something underneath the unit to make it work correctly? How would I fix that.

When up all the way, there is considerable hum though. I'm guessing that would be something in the reverb unit that need to be replaced to bring the noise down?

      thanks!

It probably had big rubber grommets originally. They tend to crumble and disappear over time. You can replace the grommets or just stick a 1/2" thick piece of foam rubber under the pan and use longer screws to mount it. It may not completely go away. Dick Dale used to hang his stand alone reverb unit by a rope trough the handle to stop feedback with it cranked for surf.

What olddawg said. You could also wrap it in foam or cloth in addition to the original tolex bag.
Re Hum: Verify that the cables are good. Sometimes it helps to clean and tighten the RCA connectors (amp AND pan side).

I would check the switch also because it gets handled more. When the shield braiding starts to come loose from the RCA jack ground it will create hum. If the hum goes away or diminishes when you unplug the switch you will know if that is an issue.

              reverb hum

I had a hum that originated from the reverb and I cleaned the rca jacks and pan sockets with contact cleaner(soaked the jacks and ran them in and out a few times, blasted it with air and no hum now! I have done this with 2 amps so far that hum.

              Good luck!

              Peace!
