  • AB165 - 6L6 pulling WAY too much current.

I've got an originally-wired AB165 with one 6L6 pulling way too much current (roughly 200-250mA from pin 8 to ground) - new screen resistors, new bias cap. The current does not change when I adjust the bias balance pot (although on the OTHER 6L6 it does, and everything on it is in-spec) - Where should I start from here? The other resistors measure very close to what they should. I've not replaced any of the other caps yet, but there is nothing visibly leaking.

The most likely thing is the tube is bad. Put the other tube in that socket. Does it bias OK, or does it act the same? DOn;t put the "bad" tube in the other socket. Now you will know if it is the tube or the amp.
