  • Minor JMI AC30 question: tube shields?

It's a minor question, but for vintage correctness on a mid-1960s AC30, would you find preamp tube shields that were 1.5 inches tall or 2 inches tall?

I've got one with no shields.

This isn't going to categorically answer your query, but taking a look through Elyea's massive tome on Vox amps, I couldn't find valve shields mentioned, but I saw pics of several AC30 chassis: some with 1.5" shields, some with 2" shields and some with none, so you would probably be safe in taking your pick.

I did a little experimenting with some tube shields I have here. The 2" types work fine for most sockets, but it takes some maneuvering to get them over the tubes closest to the filter choke.

I am sometimes guilty of assuming that manufacturers of vintage amps were more consistent in their build practices than they actually were. I have to remind myself that, in a lot of cases, they used whatever they could get, and I know that Vox struggled in the mid-1960s to keep up with production demand. After all, they were trying to sell amps, not build museum pieces.

It seems my question has returned in a different form:

I got some new production 9-pin tube shields. They're too narrow and don't fit the old tube sockets.
