  • Kalamazoo Mod

I've finished modding an old Kalamazoo Model 2 and actually have it sounding perfect for use with my Epi Dot. But there's an unused half of a 12AX7 just begging to be used. Does anybody have a suggestion on a feature I can add to utilize it? Maybe as a switchable input boost function?

It all depends on whether you want to modify the chassis, which can dramatically lower the value of a vintage amp.

A simple mod would be to parallel the two sides, which is supposed to add a tad more gain and thicken the tone.

Personally, if it sounded great, I'd leave it alone.

Does it have a cathode follower going into the tone stack?

You could do that with one triode.

I did a CF mod (the 'tweed bassman' mod on Steve A's Blue Guitar website) to my Peavey Classic 30 at one stage a few months ago and liked the subtle result that the reduced impedance going into the tone stack made on the tone (although I undid the mod because it utilized the tube in the o/D channel and I couldn't tweak it to get the O/D I wanted with that mod). I swear that I am going to try this again on another amp one day. Once I started looking into it I found a possible world of variations to these types of circuits - direct-coupled cathode followers, cascode followers etc.
