  • Help dating a Marshall 4x12 cabinet

anyone know of an online resource that can help date a Marshall cabinet? ... other than by speaker codes?

i found a local person who claims to have a "60's or 70's Marshall 4x12 cabinet" for a really nice price. but he's too far to drive to just have a look. on the phone he claimed it could even be a 90's! i'd like to narrow down this cab's age before i make the trip.

he won't open it up and give me speaker codes but did give me this info:

    -logo is missing
    -plastic handles
-1960 Lead 100 W, Made in England, Jim Marshall products LTD.
-and claims the serial number is: 5968

are there any cosmetics that might determine roughly what year it was made? obviously if it were colored it would be an early 70's ... but he claims it's just black. and did i mention he doesn't have a digital camera so there's no pic to look at! ... not a lot to go on here i know ....

Nope, not enough to go on. Without opening the back, you don't even know for sure which speakers are in there. The guy could have stuffed PyleDrivers in there, for all you know.

Does it have a switchable mono/stereo jack?

If this guy doesn't know, and is too lazy to find out, or even to borrow a camera phone...I dunno. Maybe he's just stupid.

I doubt it would be earlier than late 70's, and probably an 80's or newer.

I personally wouldn't buy it without popping the back to look, and without a listen.

You'll just have to go see for yourself if you're that interested, and it is actually a good price. Never know.
