  • 73 super reverb alert

ok I have been dinking around trying to make the reverb work. I changed the pre-amp tubes and then tested it and the reverb wasn't working so I tried some different cables for the leads on the tank and now when I turn it on I get only a ground hum that can be adjusted in volume and pitch by moving the tone and volume pots no sound it is uneffected by the 1/4'' cable used. So, I don't know what is going on with this thing I think it might need power tubes because they are getting micro. Would that cause the amp to do that. In my limited experience they usually either work and then fry out and the amp doesn't turn on or something.

Try a new reverb tank, if that's no good you may need to replace the reverb transformer - both of these are usual suspects for failures.

It's a good policy to change (& bias) your power tubes before they change themselves...they can take out other components when they fail.

You have more than one problem going on here. Isolate the problems first and then conquer them one at a time.

If you turn down the reverb control does the hum go away?

Do you have an ohmmeter? If you do, read the resistance across the two rca jacks on the tank. This will tell you if the tank transducers are ok or not. And if you have one, use your meter to test the cables for continuity.

I had a reverb problem as well a couple months ago. Since I'm everything else but an expert I asked the forum and the guys, especially Enzo, gave me some great hints to locate the problem. It was a bad resistor in my case. If you like to have a look here:
