  • Strange Hohner Amp - What am I looking at?

I always have my eye out for unusual amps. This one caught my eye. I'm a sucker for swirly grill cloth. Its advertised as a tube amp. I questioned that when I saw the closed back on the cab with no ventilation ports. Asked for pics of the inside and this is what I got. I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I see two tube sockets on the board with what appears to be a couple tubes tucked in behind the chassis and baffle board. The 8" speakers look cool. I'm not sure I see a PT which makes me think this is a widow maker. This thing has me scratching my head. Anybody have a clue?

I see what looks like '50W' something on one of the tubes, so agree with your widowmaker assessment.

      I read "Sonotone"

Widow-makers were popular in USA because of the "safe" 110V mains but much frowned upon in Europe and 220/240V mains.

      So not impossible but unlikely

We need WAY more data, as in: remove that chassis and show what´s on the other side, you might find a PT there.

Also follow where does the mains cable lead to, and follow it past power switch and fuse holder.

Also exact type of tubes there, and/or label pictures.

Thanks for the feedback. That's all the info I have and too far to drive to see for myself. Gonna pass on this one.

I would pass too. It satisfies the "unusual amp" criteria but I see too many bad unusual traits for my taste.

Well... If the price is right I'd say that at the very least the amp LOOKS cool and my experience with Magnavox speakers has usually been that they sound surprisingly good for guitar. So you'd have that, an OT and some tube sockets to play with. Maybe you'd have to buy a PT.?. Could be a cool amp with some consideration and a little work.
