  • marshall jcm 800 50w cutting out/feeding back

hello. I have a marshall jcm 800 50w with 1x12 that is cutting out and/or feeding back (its the one with the reverb channel). More and more lately when I turn it on and plug my guitar in, nothing comes out. It will cut back in and work sometimes. Occasionally, in the past, when playing my jamman looper via the amp, it will get quieter and quieter and then get louder and so on. Also, today, when I plugged it in, it just began to feed back. it was a low bassy feedback that would stay at the same level and then, for no apparent reason, get louder and louder. When I allowed it to feedback as loud as it would get, it would climax (I don't know how to spell crescendo) into a couple of weird chirping/phone sounds; but the feed back was the main thing that it did. Also, It would pop loudly--when it was malfunctioning in this manner--when ever I would flick the standby on or off; it normally doesn't do that. It started working and then it just fell silent again and now it it's just feeding back in the above manner. Lastly, when it was initially feeding back, I looked into the back of the amp and one of the tubes had a blue flame inside of it while the other one was just glowing orange around the filaments (or what ever they are called) which I'm assuming is normal (the orange glow). When it started working again both of the tubes were just glowing orange like normal. I know--it sounds like I need an excercist. I love this amp--when it's working. Any suggestions? new tubes maybe?

    P.S.

I remeber when I got this amp I thought it was really quiet for 50 watts--tube watts at that. I'm not posting this so that you guys can try and figure out what each problem is. I'm hoping that by accurately listing the defects it will be easier to diagnose. Mainly I just want it to stop cutting in and out. If I had to guess, I would say it's the tubes.

"was it one of the little tubes?"

no, it wasn't. it was the large glass tube on the right--the right if you are standing behind the amp.

I actually thought there was only two tubes. I don't think there are any tubes other than the two identical glass tubes. There are some metal cylinders. Obviously I don't know anything about amps.

Your amp has an FX loop. Have you tried to insert a spare cord from the send jack to the return jack?
