  • Help me bring a 1975 sf twin to life..

I've been playing a Fender princeton 650 for a few years now and have always felt something was missing. So I traded an Ovation SE w/ cracked neck for a 75' silverface twin w/o speakers and it blows the fuse when u turn it on... I'd like to get this project started, but need some advice on how to get started... w/o spending too much money. Help!

Don't attempt to power the amp without a speaker load. Your output transformer won't like it.

Try removing all of the tubes and see if it will power up without blowing the fuse.

Do a search and build a light-bulb current limiter and put the tubes back in one at a time, turning the amp off each time before inserting a tube. Once you know if you have a short and what part of the circuit it is in, it is easier to narrow down. The current limiter will save you the frustration of having to replace fuses all the time until you figure out what is shorting out.

Also, you may want to pull the pan off the bottom of the chassis to make sure the filter caps aren't getting bubbley on the ends.

    Hope it helps.

Don't forget to read the safety precautions on this site if you are not already aware of filter capacitors storing lethal voltages.
