I believe the speaker in my Ampeg Gemini II is cracked. I want to sell it, and prefer to have it in good working order first. Is it better and/or cheaper to have the speaker re-coned, or just replace the speaker? It is the original Ampeg speaker from 1966.

It really depends on the brand and model of speaker that's in your amp. Unless it is a highly valued speaker, it probably is less expensive to buy a new speaker. It's difficult to find the exact recone parts to restore vintage speakers to original condition. When you replace the cone with modern parts that aren't duplicates of the original parts, the speaker will work fine. It just won't sound the same as the original design. That might matter to some buyers. A recone costs around $65 for speakers other than JBL. Another choice might be to search for a good used speaker online of the same make/model as your original.

If you are going to sell it and the speaker is cracked bit operational, I would attempt to repair it. You can use tissue paper and thinned contact cement. When you are done mask off everything but the cone and spray it with flat black paint. Believe me, music stores do this all of the time. If the speaker is completely shot, my vote is to look for one on eBay. Chances are it was used in a lot of things. For an old Ampeg, my guess is a square magnet CTS. I find them for free in old Magnavox stereo consoles sometimes.

I'll use super glue to repair cracks and small tears in cones. The paper absorbs the first application, then the second fills the gap. Its light and stiff....perfect for this kind of repair. Won't work on damaged edges tho...The farmer takes a wife, the barber takes a pole....
