  • Super Reverb Chirp

I've recapped a 1973 Super Reverb, as well as putting all new resistors in it. I also set it back to AB763 specs. Now, whenever I turn it on from Standby, it makes a moderate pop and then a short, ascending chirp, much like a small bird. Then it works fine, and sounds incredible. I've noticed that when the standby pop happens, the neon light in the vibrato flashes very brightly just before the chirp occurs. It has some ticking in the vibrato path when that is engaged, and I got a lot of it out by repositioning two wires that were running close by. A low frequency tick is still present, however.

Are the pop, ticking, and chirp related?

Yes, you've got wood swallows living in the reverb pan (sorry, couldn't help myself).

Well, you did enought rewiring that you could have moved most anything. If I remember correctly the original circuit used the bias balance for the output tubes and that the vibrato was tied to the raw bias - check and see if this lead is still in place and if not reestablish a negative source there. Lack will cause all sorts of "birdie" issues.
