i'm trying to find a good/ loud amp for bass. i have read a little about the specifics of a bass amp, but i still don't entirely get the need for a bass particular amp. i found a marshall vs100 half stack on craigslist for pretty cheap. i can't seem to find out whether this is safe to play bass with or not. i play guitar sometimes, too, as well as some different electronic stuff. basically i just need to know what i should be looking for.
i realize i may be in a little over my head at this point, but you have to start somewhere, right?

the amp itself doesnt need to be much different, but the speakers need to handle the extra low end of the bass. usually there are fewer effects on bass amps, and they will usually be cleaner sounding.

so, what, other than low volume on low end notes, would be the negative effects of using a regular guitar amp for bass? or the efffects of high notes through a bass amp??

A guitar stack is fine if you want a dirty bass sound like you'd use in a power trio, where you're practically playing rhythm guitar as well as bass. Hendrix, The Who and so on, their bass players all used 4x12 stacks. It probably won't sound good in a bigger band though. And like black labb said, if you really crank it up, you might blow the speakers.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"
