    When something looks really bad like that 800RB pic I usually start with removing the PCB and taking it over to the sink. There I spray the nasty area with oven cleaner (yep - it's true) and spend a few minutes with a paintbrush gently scrubbing the stuff around & loosening as much of the soot & charring as possible. Follow with an extended rinse under running water also using a paintbrush to help remove residue. Oh - it helps to wear gloves & have a window open while doing this BTW, and don't leave the cleaner on there more than 10 minutes or so.

    I use compressed air to blow off the water & dry things out.

    The above procedure reveals the actual damage so a better repair assessment can be made. A nice side effect is the circuit traces will be defluxed & shiny.

      I gave the board a second look.
      It appears to be a 'one sided' PCB.
      So all the carbon soot is on the non copper trace side.
      It may be easy to clean all of the residue off.
      That's a plus.

        What I nice and helpful reception. I'll tear into tonight and start lining up parts from the BOM I found. Photo of cleaned up pcb to follow.

            Here's the trace side of the board. Some acetone and a paint brush did a little to clean things up but I'm going to need to see an intact board to know what traces passed into the spirit world.

              Not good but also not that bad. Make a drawing of existing (and not existing - vaporized) tracks, remove components, clean the board, dremel out the carbonized board. See how much you need to remove. I was fixing such boards.
