  • Peavey CS800 Powerboard component ?

Ok..I tried to edit /delete the previous thread, but can't find where /how to do it, so ...I have this question about a component on the power board. The paper covered transformer /coil is coming apart . I know they put some kind of varnish on these ,and this one has apparently all worn off ,so the paper is coming loose. Should I replace them , or can they be revarnished ? This was/is a mess inside. Much cleaner than it was when I got , but still dirty. I was told one channel didn't work, so I'm trying to get it fixed for a friend.

    Thanks ,Tom

Are we talking about the output inductor. L1?
I would call Peavey & ask Glen whether or not you have a problem with it..

Yep Jazz, I think that's it. How would I get in touch with Glen ?

The inductor, in the lower left hand corner of the first photo looks fine. it is just one continuous coiled wire and the paper is just there to prevent abrasion if something rubs against. You could make it prettier by putting in a short length of colored shink wrap and use a blow-dryer to shrink it to fit. If it is not loose at the two solder connections, it is OK.
Most of the rest of the dirt looks dry so using a stiff brush and a vacuum cleaner held close to the area you are brushing will take care of most of it. Don't spay any liquid into it for cleaning until all that dust of removed, otherwise you will never get rid of dust that has gotten wet. The dust is a problem for the heat sinks, it really lowers their effectiveness. Clean those and keep them clean.
If it is residue of smoke, clean it but you also might need to address corrosion. cigarette smoke residue has tar and ash, the ash when combines with moisture forms several byproducts, one being a strong base, the same as lye.

Thank you for the info. It is much appreciated. Most of the dirt has been removed with a similar procedure you outlined above. Now I need to find the problem

That coil is probably fine. Tug on it. If it doesn;t come free, it isn;t broken, and leave it alone. Ugly doesn;t matter. Brand new ones look that way.

Vacuum, paint brush , air blower. It's just dust.

I see only one IC on the driver card, so I lied in your other thread, it probably is not a C, it is an A or B.

                What problem are you fixing?

My friend said only one channel works. It isn't blowing fuses to my knowledge .

                    Checking the 800CS

                    Enzo , Jazz ,

Where on the amp would be the best place to check with a meter to see if both channels have an output ? I have the amp on through the light bulb limiter , fuse didn't blow. I have both volumes at zero , no input , no load.

                    Thanks fellers !

                    Tom
