  • Powered Speaker - Lo-Z Balanced Input?

I have several Chinese clones of a JBL EON 15 G2 powered portable PA speakers made by "Naphon". (see pic attached). I don't have a schematic and Naphon can't provide me one. The input is 1/4" . I'd like to determine if the input will take a lo-z balanced TRS input. I can open up the amp and look but the presence of TRS connections may only be for "stereo" input purposes. Is there something I can measure with my DMM or look for that would help me determine if it is a lo-z balanced input?
    Thanks.

    Yes it will.
The TIP of the 1/4" plug connects to pin 2 of the XLR
The SLEEVE of the 1/4" (ground) connects to pin 1&3 of the XLR

    Then it will work.
You can buy ready made ones.

TRS input might be for stereo or balanced. You still wire it the same.

    TRS Balanced connection:
Tip of 1/4" goes to XLR pin 2
Ring of 1/4" goes to XLR pin 3
Sleeve of 1/4" goes to pin 1 of XLR

    TRS Stereo connection:

    (It's a Y cord)
tip of 1/4" goes to right XLR pin 2
ring of 1/4" goes to left XLR pin 2
Sleeve of 1/4" goes to pins 1&3 on both XLRs (you jump it to both channels)

You have to try it to find out if it's stereo or balanced 1/4" in...
ONE speaker with that backplate feeds the other speaker?
OR do both speakers have identical mono amp backplates?
You have to find out, if TRS is stereo or balanced mono in...and make your cables accordingly.

Terrific. I'll try this weekend. "You have to try it to find out if it's stereo or balanced 1/4" in...
ONE speaker with that backplate feeds the other speaker?
OR do both speakers have identical mono amp backplates?"
It has a speaker level output jack (Neutrik) that will feed another passive speaker - hence the "Balance" control.

Then it seems like TRS in should be wired stereo...
tip of 1/4" = right connect to right XLR pin 2
ring of 1/4" = left connect to left XLR pin 2
Sleeve of 1/4" = ground, connect to pins 1&3 on both XLRs

should work then. However PA store should have ready made "breakout" Y cable.
Splits TRS stereo to 2X mono XLRs - to connect to stereo (right left) XLR outputs of mixer.

Yes, it's called a TRS / XLR stereo breakout Y cable.

Thanks. I have some breakout cables that I can re-purpose or make up a Dual XLR > TRS from parts I have according to your recommended connections.

There are two input jacks; "Left and Main-Right". Only the right produces any speaker output no matter what the "Balance" control is set to. But very strange design. BTW - the main board is labelled "KS 153A". I googled it but couldn't find anything relevant. Each 1/4 female input jack is wired as mono although they are TRS ready. I opened it up and changed some connections around so that it seems to work fine feeding from the balanced mixer output. I decided to try to wire the "right" to Tip and "left" to Ring. That seemed to work although I have no idea whether I actually have a balanced line or simply unbalanced with an extra line. (Is there a way to measure with a DMM to see if it is balanced?) I'm speculating that a Chinese "engineer" may have been trying to copy the design from JBL or EV or etc. and mis-labelled what they found.
Anyway, I didn't see smoke or hear distortion so I'll modify the other units I have in the same manner. Thanks for your suggestions.

The wiring I gave you is an accepted standard in USA.
But good point, who knows if China follows a standard?
