  • Peavey KB60 KB60A Speaker Replacement

    Hi Friends...

I went looking for an old thread to post a reply but couldn't find it. Not sure if it was here or the Peavey Whammy Bar forum. In any event.

I have a Peavey KB60A. It's similar to the older KB60 but with a noticeable difference- the speaker. The older KB60s had a woofer and piezo mounted just above it. The KB60A uses a coax speaker. I'm not sure who was the manufacturer of these speakers. All I know is that the speaker in my amp was BAD !!

Instead of replacing the coax with a like kind, I decided to turn this into a project and invest some dollars. This is a great amp- sound, size etc. I opted for the overkill solution. I installed an Eminence Kappa 12A woofer, an Eminence ATP 80 compression horn, and connected those through an Eminence PXB2:3K5 2-Way Crossover crossover. I just happened to have that crossover. I think you can get similar results running the woofer straight to the amp and using a high pass filter for the horn. But don't skimp... get a real high pass filter (cap and inductor). You can find these on eBay. Make sure the crossover point matches your horn.

When all was assembled, the results sound great!!

By the way, Eminence has something called the Beta 12CX. It is a woofer that allows you to attach an APT 50 compression driver right onto the magnet – no adaptor needed. But I opted for the larger magnet option (and of course the more complex solution). Your other option is to use a woofer with a Piezo just like the older KB60 amps.

Total time for the project, less than two hours. The only special tool you will need is a 3 inch hole saw bit (used to cut in the compression driver).

My thanks to Anthony L. @ Eminence for always taking the time to reply to my inquiries and helping me with the speaker selections.

Anyway... for those who find this thread, I hope it helps you.

    Cool post, congratulations.

And, yes, a better speaker improves things 1 billion times more than, say, changing caps to different colour ones or similar nonsense.
