  • Ampeg Coffin 16 ohm adaptor

    Hi all

Lately I've been having bother with the fact that my Toaster amp only has a 16 ohm speaker tap. I like to use it as a bass amp, but I don't much like lugging my 16 ohm bass cabinet everywhere.

Most of the places our band practices have those 8x10" Ampeg cabinets. They are 4 ohms, but the other day I noticed that they have extra jack inputs allowing you to drive them as two 8 ohm 4x10"s. So I made a special speaker lead with one end normal, but the other end fitted with two jack plugs wired in series. Plugging these into the cab's dual mono inputs connects the two banks of speakers in series to give 16 ohms.

It worked great and was more than loud enough, even though the amp is only 50 watts. Before, I had tried plugging the amp into the ordinary 4 ohm input, but it struggled to make enough volume and had a weak strangled tone.

We don't have mega stage volume though- I never get the volume and gain dials on a full sized SVT above 3- so YMMV. Anyway I hope someone else finds this trick useful. The "Ampeg Coffin Adaptor" is now a part of my gig bag.
"Enzo, I see that you replied parasitic oscillations. Is that a hypothesis? Or is that your amazing metal band I should check out?"
